If you follow baseball, then yesterday was a big day for you. Coveted Seattle Mariners player Ichiro Suzuki was traded to the New York Yankees, causing fans across the nation to express their thoughts on the big move. But there’s no more public of a Mariners fan than Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, who decided to pay tribute to his beloved player with a song.
    .

Gibbard, who will release a solo album later this fall, has been a vocal fan of both baseball and the Mariners on his Twitter feed. So it’s not surprising that the musician unearthed an old track he wrote called “Ichiro’s Theme” in honor of Suzuki’s trade. “I wrote this a few years ago,” Gibbard tweeted. “Today seems like the best day to let you all hear it. Thank you, Ichiro.” The number is typical Gibbard, except here the singer croons lines like “Ichiro, you’re wonderful” and “Go go go Ichiro/rounding third and headin’ for home.” Listen below:

Honestly, if we played a professional sport, this is exactly the sort of song we’d want written about us. It’s quirky, funny and especially poignant when you realize that Suzuki now plays for the Yankees, a team we’re certain Gibbard doesn’t quite feel so passionate about. The musician later tweeted, “If you were born and raised in the NW and you’re at this M’s game in Yankees gear it’s clear your parents didn’t raise you right.” Co-sign, buddy.

What do you think of “Ichiro’s Theme”? Is it an apt tribute to the beloved player? Can you imagine a New York musician writing something like this for A-Rod? (We can’t.) Tell us in the comments.

I don't think that it's really about him, but Ben Gibbard is so amazing that he can write about whatever he wants. He's a genius.
